DESCRIPTION

Copper is an essential trace element involved in many important enzymatic reactions. Of all the trace minerals in the body, copper is the third most abundant (after Iron and Zinc). The highest concentration of copper is found in the brain and liver. The body must be permanently have 70-80 mg of copper available within.

There is a very important relation between Copper and Zinc. Zinc should never be taken without Copper or Copper without Zinc in the proportion of Copper : Zinc of 1:(5-10). Chelating with two molecules of the amino acid glycine increases both bio-absorption and bioavailability of copper and zinc. The food richest in copper are oyster shells.

According to Dr. Leslie Klevay’s postulate: “A relative or absolute deficiency of copper characterized by a high ratio of zinc to copper results in hyper-cholesteromia (increased cholesterol levels in the blood), disturbances of the heart muscle (myocardium), damages to arterial walls and in conclusion a high mortality rate.”

Symptoms of copper deficiency

Because Copper is essential for the absorption and utilization of iron, copper deficiency results in iron deficiency anemia leading to reduction in the number of red blood cells.

Copper is necessary for the operation of the lysil-oxidase enzyme required for collagen binding to elastin. Copper deficiency leads to a lack of integrity of collagen elasticity with deleterious effects for the skin, ligaments and cartilages. The lack of collagen elasticity may result in rupture of blood vessel walls, osteoporosis and impaired level of bones and joints.

Other signs of copper deficiency include: brain and liver damage resulting in high cholesterol and impaired immunity.

Copper deficiency can lead to aortic aneurysm. Abdominal aorta supplies blood to the legs. Aorta affection can lead to insufficient blood supply to the legs and even rupture of the aorta wall.

Copper deficiency leads to varicose veins.
