DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic fingerprint of each of us as the human genome is encoded in the DNA (genetic information). Each individual has his specific genome that makes us different from each other. DNA contains the genetic information that determines the functionality of every cell in the body and at larger scale the functionality of each organ. So-called “genetic defect” are DNA abnormalities, defects that result in a malfunction of certain organs resulting in a defective functioning of certain organs or predisposition to or induction of diseases, including cancers.
DNA Repair is a sequence of processes by which the cell identifies and corrects faults detected in the DNA. Defects or DNA lesions can arise from internal causes such as abnormal metabolic processes or external causes (including radiotherapy radiation, toxins, chemicals, synthetic drugs, chemotherapy, exposure to ultraviolet rays, etc.). These lesions cause structural damage to DNA that alter or completely eliminate the ability of the cell to transcribe the genetic material in the replica DNA. Other injuries lead to dangerous mutations affecting “daughter” cell survival after its mitosis. Mitosis is the process of cell division in which the chromosomes in the cell nucleus is separated into two identical sets of chromosomes. Cell division is an essential process of “regeneration” of the body and is very important that chromosomes are identical in order to maintain the genome unaltered. The occurrence of defective chromosomes leads to ilness.
The rate of DNA repair depends on many factors including the type of cell, cell age and extra-cellular environment. A cell that has accumulated too many injuries or no longer able to carry out DNA repair can:
- enter a sleep state of senescence (similar to an aged cell at its end of life);
- commit suicide, a phenomenon known as apoptosis or programmed cell death;
- divide uncontrollably leading to formation of cancer tumors.
It is therefore very important that all cells in the body possess the capacity to repair the DNA.
