There are many species of antioxidants. But not all antioxidants are the same. Each species of antioxidant plays a specific role in the body by fighting free radicals in a specific organ or system in the body. Ellagic acid plays its specific role.

Pomegranate seeds (Punica granatum) contain a complex of antioxidants and proanthocyanidins, one of the most important being ellagic acid.

ancer can exist in the body undetected either “latently” or “early”. Taking Ellagic Acid once or twice a year may be part of an adjuvant protocol in cancer prevention. But not only that. Pomegranate extract also contains other antioxidants necessary to maintain general health.

Ellagic acid can induce apoptosis (death of malignant cells) in cancers of the skin, breast, colon, pancreas, esophagus, liver, prostate, cervical, uterus. It is also useful in leukemia.

A new publication in the American Cancer Society’s Guide to Alternative and Complementary Methods in Cancer Treatment, shows that Ellagic Acid is a very promising natural supplement as it can lead to apoptosis (cancer cell death) without affecting normal cells.

Ellagic acid is a phenolic compound that inhibits the multiplication of cancer cells and also prevents the appearance and development of cancer cells in people with a predisposition to cancer.

A 9-year study by Dr. Daniel Nixon at the Holliger Institute at the University of South Carolina on a group of 500 patients concluded that Ellagic acid can lead to “G arrest” in 48 hours (inhibiting and stopping cancer cell division) and apoptosis. (programmed death of the cancer cell) in 72 hours.

Ellagic acid promotes carcinogenic detoxification by stimulating various isoforms of the enzyme glutathione-S-transferase in the hepatoma (liver cancer). Another mechanism by which ellagic acid can inhibit tumor initiation is by destroying carcinogen metabolites.

Chemotherapy, radiation and other conventional treatments kill both cancer cells and normal cells, destroying the immune system. It seems that Ellagic Acid only targets cancer cells.

Evidence from recent research indicates that the antioxidant power of ellagic acid is particularly active in the liver and pancreas, where it can fight inflammation and fibrosis. But Ellagic Acid is not a simple antioxidant. Animal studies have shown that it also acts as a detoxifier by attaching to toxins and assisting in liver detoxification phases I and II. It has recently been found that intestinal bacteria metabolize ellagic acid resulting in the production of bioactive Urolithins A, B, C and D. Urolithin A is the most active and effective intestinal metabolite and acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent. And this process differentiates ellagic acid from other antioxidants.

A Google search for Urolithins shows that these metabolites can greatly benefit overall health. Make sure you have a healthy gut flora to maximize the benefits of ellagic acid. Probiotics will help in this regard.

Elagic acid is difficult to absorb in the intestines, but if it is associated with Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT-Medium Chain Triglycerides) its absorption increases significantly. Coconut oil contains MCT so it is advisable to combine a capsule of coconut oil administered together with Elagic Acid.
