Mitochondria is the “motor” that powers and controls the functioning of the cell. PQQ is a state-of-the-art scientific discovery with numerous therapeutic applications. PQQ cannot be synthesized by the body and is thus defined as an essential nutrient that must be brought into the body by supplementation. In 2010, researchers at Davis University in California published the results of research that demonstrated the critical role that PQQ plays in activating cell signaling pathways directly involved in cell function, development, and energy metabolism.
Activation of signal molecules
Researchers at the University of California analyzed the influence of PQQ on cell signaling pathways involved in the generation of new mitochondria and found that PQQ activates 3 signaling molecules that lead to the spontaneous biogenesis of new mitochondria in cells:
- PQQ activates PCG-1α expression, a regulatory master that mobilizes the cellular response to various external triggers. It directly stimulates genes that promote cell proliferation, growth and respiration. Positive effects are recorded in the functioning of cells in all organs.
- PQQ triggers the CREB signaling protein that stimulates the creation of new mitochondria.
- PQQ regulates a recently discovered signal protein called DJ-1 involved in cell function and survival. DJ-1 has been shown to prevent cell death caused by intense oxidative stress induced by internal or external factors.
Moreover, the study of American researchers showed that PQQ not only protects mitochondria against oxidative stress but also promotes the spontaneous generation of new mitochondria in aged cells, a process known as spontaneous mitochondrial biogenesis. This is an important anti-aging effect.
Cardio protection
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco have investigated the effect of PQQ compared to Metoprolol in cases of myocardial infarction resulting in heart muscle dysfunction. It has been found that PQQ is superior to the Metropolis in terms of protecting the mitochondria in the heart muscle against destruction caused by ischemia / oxidative reperfusion. PQQ should be given either before a heart attack or in the first hours after a heart attack.
Radioprotection
It has been found that PQQ provides protection of cells against the effects of radiation which makes it useful in cases of cancer in which radiation therapy is performed.
Neuroprotection / Cognition
PQQ protects brain cells and the nervous system against mitochondrial damage in aging, degenerative diseases, senile dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, amyloid lateral sclerosis, diabetes. PQQ not only supports cellular energy, but has neuroprotective properties.
It protects cognitive health by promoting the recovery of damaged nerves, protecting neurons from oxidative damage and toxicity (including glutamate-induced toxicity) and helping to combat degenerative changes common to many neurodegenerative diseases.
