Its root contains over 140 active ingredients. People in Russia and the Scandinavian countries have used Rhodiola for centuries to treat anxiety, fatigue and depression. Today it is widely used as a dietary supplement for its many health benefits.
One study investigated the effects of Rhodiola extract on 101 stressed people. Participants were given 400 mg daily for 4 weeks. After only 3 days there were significant improvements in stress symptoms, such as: fatigue, exhaustion and anxiety. These improvements continued throughout the study.
Stress, anxiety and inadequate sleep are just a few factors that can contribute to physical and mental fatigue. Due to its adaptogenic properties, Rhodiola helps to relieve fatigue. A 4-week study in 60 people with fatigue related to stress analyzed the effects on quality of life and symptoms of fatigue, depression and attention. Participants received either 576 mg of rhodiola or placebo daily. It was found that rhodiola had a positive effect on fatigue and on the attention level compared to placebo.
Depression is a common but serious illness that adversely affects the way of life. It is believed to occur when chemicals in the brain, called neurotransmitters, become unbalanced. In a 6-week study on the efficacy of rhodiola on depression symptoms, 89 people with mild or moderate depression were randomly assigned to receive 340 mg of rhodiola extract or placebo. Patients who received Rhodiola experienced significant improvements in general depression, insomnia and emotional stability, while the placebo group did not show any improvement.
One study tested the effects on mental fatigue in 56 doctors who work at night. Doctors were randomized to receive either 170 mg of rhodiola or one placebo pill per day for two weeks. Rhodiola reduced mental fatigue and improved work performance by 20% compared to placebo. In another study, students showed significantly reduced mental fatigue, improved sleep, and increased motivation to study after taking supplements with Rhodiola for 20 days. The exam results were also 8% better than those in the placebo group.
In one study, participants were given 200 mg of Rhodiola or placebo, 2 hours before performing a cycling test. Those taking Rhodiola were able to exercise, on average 24 seconds more than those receiving placebo. While 24 seconds may seem like little, the difference between first and second place in a race can be milliseconds.
Another study looked at its effects on endurance exercise performance. The participants cycled for a simulated six-mile (approximately 11 km) race. One hour before the race, participants were given Rhodiola at a dose of 3 mg / kg body weight or placebo. The group that administered Rhodiola ended the race significantly faster than the placebo group.
