What is Vitamin B6?
Vitamin B6 has a positive effect on physical and mental health and it is called the “woman’s vitamin” due to the range of symptoms of premenstrual syndrome that can be improved. Vitamin B6 is involved in more functions of the body than most other nutrients.
Vitamin B6 deficiency is associated with microcytic anemia, electroencephalographic abnormalities, dermatitis with cheilosis (dryness and scaling of the lips, cracks in the corners of the mouth) and glossitis (swollen tongue), depression, confusion and weakened immune function. People with limited concentrations of Vitamin B6, or with a mild deficiency, may not have signs or symptoms of deficiency for several months or even years. In children, Vitamin B6 deficiency causes irritability, abnormally acute hearing and even convulsions.
End stage renal disease, chronic kidney failure and other kidney problems can cause Vitamin B6 deficiency. In addition, Vitamin B6 deficiency can result from malabsorption syndrome, such as celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis, certain genetic diseases, such as homocystinuria, and some medications (eg.: antiepileptics).
