Borage oil (Borago oficinalis), also known as the lamb’s tongue or the Bears Honey, is the most rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), essential fatty acid, omega-6.
Borage oil from New Roots Herbal is considered to be the purest on the Canadian market, being obtained by cold pressing from genetically unmodified seeds from special, biological crops without chemical fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides and containing exclusively type Omega-6 oils (Gamma-Linolenic and Linoleic).
This oil is an excellent companion for Canadian Primula Oil EPO-1000, especially for women.
Once processed by the body, GLA is transformed into hormone-like substances that can block inflammation. GLA seems to calm down the overall inflammation, making it an attractive treatment option for arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. The most natural GLA concentration naturally comes from borage seed oil (24%). Much of the scientific research has been performed with supplements rich in GLA, which has led to a significant interest in the aforementioned health conditions as well as those affected by premenstrual syndrome, benign breast disease, eczema, psoriasis, obesity and vascular disorders.
Essential fatty acids common to borage seed oil are eventually transformed into hormone-like substances known as prostaglandins.
Prostaglandins are important for regulating a range of body functions, including:
- inflammation;
- swelling;
- pain at the eye level, joints or blood vessels;
- secretions from the mucous membranes and their viscosity;
- smooth muscles and autonomous reflexes;
- the gastrointestinal system;
- arteries;
- ears;
- heart;
- water retention;
- blood coagulation capacity;
- allergic reaction;
- rheumatoid arthritis;
- nerve transmission;
- steroid production and hormone synthesis.
Borage oil improves discomfort in premenstrual syndrome, endometriosis, and fibrochistic breasts.
GLA from borage oil can help reduce cramps and pain associated with menstruation. It can also reduce some of the breasts sensitivity that women experience before menstrual periods and relieve the inflammation associated with endometriosis. Many patients suffering from premenstrual syndrome have unusually low levels of GLA, which is why supplements can help a lot. In women with fibrochastic breasts, essential fatty acids can reduce breast inflammation and promote the absorption of iodine, a mineral that is often found to abnormally low levels in those with this condition.
