Astaxanthin (Astaxanthin) is an antioxidant in the carotenoids family. The richest in astaxanthin is the red alga Haematococcus pluvialis. It is Krill’s favorite food leading to the red, specific color.
Each type of antioxidant acts predominantly in certain organs with different annihilation functions of the oxidative species specific to that organ. Astaxanthin acts predominantly in small blood vessels with positive effects on the heart, brain, nervous system and eyes. But perhaps the most important antioxidant action of Astaxanthin is at the level of mitochondria, which is the engine of the cell, which produces the energy necessary for its functioning. Unlike other antioxidants, Astaxanthin has the greatest ability to annihilate those free radicals with “singular oxygen”.
Since Astaxanthin can cross the blood-brain barrier, it plays a very important role in everything that is related to brain activity, protecting the brain’s nervous system from the harmful effects of oxidative stress. Astaxanthin is therefore useful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or for the reduction of sequelae caused by a vascular accident. Since Astaxanthin easily reaches the small capillary vessels that feed the eye, it can complement and therefore synergistically associate with Lutein and Zeaxanthin.
Astaxanthin from Provita Nutrition provides a maximum therapeutic dose of 15 mg per capsule, making it one of the most potent in the market. Some recent clinical studies indicate a positive effect of Astaxanthin on the immune system with application in some cancers.
