What is ProteniX?

Star anise (Illicium verum), is one of the vital ingredients of the Chinese medicinal herbs with the actions of dispelling cold and regulating the flow of Qi (vital energy). Several biologically important phytochemicals reported from Star Anise have shown to have antiviral effects and were studied against several viral pathogens. Star Anise is rich in Shikimic acid, a natural organic compound and one of the most widely studied molecules in the context of its antiviral effects 2 (Patra – 2020). Shikimic acid is also the intermediary model for the production of drugs effective against influenza viruses. Oseltamivir or Tamiflu derived from shikimic acid have been found to be potent influenza viral neuraminidase inhibitors against most influenza strains. When a virus penetrates a cell, it can also affect its DNA resulting in uncontrolled multiplication leading to cancer3 (Singh et al – 2020).
Star Anise extracts are also rich in phenolic antioxidants4 (Yang et al. -2012). Polyphenols promote immunity to foreign pathogens via various pathways due to the multiple types of polyphenol receptors on the immune cells which subsequently activate signaling pathways to initiate immune responses5 (Ding et al. – Regulation of Immune Function by Polyphenols, 2018).
Pinus sylvestris needle oil is an essential oil rich in monoterpene hydrocarbons (26.4–41.3%) and diterpenoids (6.2–13.7 %)6 (Judzentiene-2008). Scientists evaluated various terpenes for their anti-viral properties, among which monoterpenes showed good results. Diterpenoids (diterpenes) have antimicrobial properties because its ability to kill or stop the growth of microorganisms. Terpenes have a wide range of medicinal uses among which antiplasmodial (antimalarial) activity is notable as its mechanism of action is similar to the popular antimalarial drug—chloroquine7 (Cox-Georgian et al. -2019). The mechanism of action is the disruption of the protein complex that enables malaria-causing parasites to infect, replicate in red blood cells8 (Koning-Ward, Tania F. 2018). Some viruses also use proteins to penetrate cells. The ability to disrupt viral proteins can be of great value against certain types of viruses that use proteins to penetrate and infect the cell. The ability to disrupt abnormal proteins that are carcinogenic can be very important in the fight against malignancies.
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a “phlegm mover”. In TCM, Phlegm is one of the pathogenic factors (disease causing) responsible for the occurrence and development of a range of disorders. In translation, the internal mucus (Phlegm) is often formed by dysfunction of the lungs and the spleen caused by “internal fire”9 (CPh -2010). Spleen is an important element of the immune system. In TCM it is said that as “Fire” has an ascending property it will affect the upper regions of our body including lungs. For health matters, “Fire” may also be seen as having a fever.
The combination of these 3 ingredients creates a powerful synergistic and complementary formulation with a broad spectrum of action in respiratory infections.
