Rheumatoid Arthritis (Rheumatoid Polyarthritis) Protocol

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect more than just the joints. In some people, the disease can damage a variety of body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels. Classified as an autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system incorrectly attacks the tissues of its own body.
In contrast to joint damage due to wear and tear, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of the joints, causing painful inflammation that can eventually lead to bone erosion and joint deformity. The inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis can affect other parts of the body. Severe rheumatoid arthritis can cause physical disabilities.
Symptoms may include:
- Warm, swollen joints.
- Stiffness of the joint that is usually worse in the morning or after inactivity.
- Fatigue, fever and loss of appetite.
Early rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect the smaller joints first – especially the hand and toes.
As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips, and shoulders. In most cases, symptoms appear on both sides of the body.
About 40 percent of people with rheumatoid arthritis also show signs and symptoms that do not involve the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many non-articular structures, including:
- Skin
- Eyes
- Lungs
- Heart
- Kidney
- Salivary glands
- Nervous tissues
- Bone marrow
- Blood vessels
Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may vary in severity and may even appear and disappear. The periods of increased activity of the disease, alternate with periods of relative remission – when the swelling and pain fade or disappear. Over time, rheumatoid arthritis can cause the joints to deform and move out of place.
