Description

Creatine is an amino acid (amino acids are the basic blocks of proteins) that is produced in the body by the liver and kidneys and derives from diet through meat and animal products.

The US Food and Drug Administration classifies creatine as a dietary supplement (as a vitamin).

In the body, creatine is converted into a molecule called phosphocreatine, which serves as a fast energy storage reservoir. Phosphocreatine is especially important in tissues such as voluntary muscles and the nervous system, which periodically require large amounts of energy.

Studies have shown that creatine can increase the performance of athletes in activities that require quick energy consumption and can help athletes to recover faster after exercise with high energy consumption.

An analysis of therapies for motor neurone disease performed by Bedlack RS et al. and published in Expert Opin Emerg Drugs. 2007 May; 12 (2): 229-52, indicates the possibility of creatine association in Lateral Amyotrophic Sclerosis. Two scientific studies have shown that creatine may be beneficial for neuromuscular degenerative disorders. A study by Canadian researchers Mark Tarnopolsky and Joan Martin at the McMaster University Medical Center in Ontario found that creatine can cause modest increases in strength in people with a variety of neuromuscular disorders.

Beal’s work was published in Neurology, 1999 March 10; 52 (4): 854-7, and the second work was published in Neurology, March 01, 1999; 52 (4).

Generally, athletes take a “loading dose” of 20 g of creatine a day for five or six days, then continue with a “maintenance dose” of 2-5 g of creatine per day. The analysis reported by Stephen P. Bird in J Sports Sci Med. 2003 Dec; 2 (4): 123-132 found benefits at a loading dose of 10 g for five days, followed by a maintenance dose of 5 g for five to six days.
