Zingiber officinale, popularly called “ginger” is the name given to a herbaceousplant from tropical regions with rich aromatic rhizome essential oils. It is a perennial species, which needs a high and constant temperature and constant humidity to develop properly. The rhizome of ginger has an irregular shape, it’s twisted and gnarled, reaching up to 5-6 inches in length. Ginger is highly valued in oriental cuisines from India, Malaysia, Nepal, Bangladesh etc. An alternative name of ginger, introduced by the Turks in Moldavia and Wallachia was the ‘white pepper’.  The name, Ginger has been used mainly in Banat and Transylvania from the hungarian language “gyömber” and then it was imposed across the country. In former British colonies such as Canada, Australia, Jamaica, Kenya, they consume a so-called “beer” of ginger (ginger beer) which is actually a non-alcoholic drink.

Important active substances contained in ginger are specific compounds called gingerols, phenols, volatile oil.


  • In cases of flu, it acts beneficially on the lung, stomach and spleen.
  • Indigestion can be treated with ginger. It is soothing abdominal pain, helps digestion, removes gases, improves appetite, neutralizes toxins. You can get rid of a rebel hiccup, nausea or vomiting, or even food poisoning.

Ginger is used often as an antidote in case of seasickness. Is employed also for the control of altitude sickness, car sickness, the rotary movement sickness. Ginger acts against vomiting, nausea, upset stomach or bowel.

In China it is used as anti-asthmatic for over 3000 years.
