DESCRIPTION

After finding a choline nutritional deficiency worldwide in 2000 (Reference 1), the World Health Organization declared Choline an essential nutrient for human health.

A member of the family of B vitamins, Choline is therefore an essential nutrient for the proper functioning of the body, which means it must be obtained from food or supplements.

Among other things, choline can improve memory and can reduce cholesterol. Choline is sometimes administered to athletes to improove speed and reduce the effects of fatigue. But the most important action of choline is for liver health.

Methionine is an amino acid with synergistic effect when combined with choline. Similarly is vitamin B-12.

Choline helps maintain cellular structural integrity while methionine has antioxidant effects, preventing the oxidation of fats in the liver. Vitamin B-12 contributes to the formation of red blood cells and helps maintain blood fluidity.

Together, choline and methionine acts to reduce the accumulation of fat in the liver, leading to fatty liver disease. Choline and methionine are lipotropic factors that help the liver process fats, giving the possibility of eliminating any excess fat.

Although fatty liver is present in all overweight people, fatty liver can be found in all other people with inadequate diets rich in carbohydrates, sugar and fats.

Since 1984, researchers have shown that they can induce liver cancer even just by a diet deficient in choline and methionine (Reference 2).

Moreover, since 1949, British researchers led by Dr. Best showed that liver damage from drinking alcohol or consuming excess sugar can be prevented by taking choline. (Reference 3)

Types of Choline and its functions

1. Fatty liver:

The most used form of Choline is found in dietary supplements choline bitartrate. It fulfills its hepato-protective function.

2. The integrity of the cell membrane and cell communication

Choline is also necessary to produce acetyl-choline and phosphatidylcholine which are structural components of the cellular membrane. COLINA also has to  contains phospholipids which are intramolecular precursor messenger molecules. For these functions it is required a form of choline derived from phosphatidylcholine.

3. The transmission of nerve impulses

Choline is a precursor of acetyl-choline, an important neurotransmitter involved in muscle control, memory and many other functions.

4. Choline is also a source methyl groups

Choline can be oxidized in the body to form a metabolite called “betaine”. Betaine is a major source of methyl groups (CH3) required for methylation reactions. By methylation of the blood homocysteine (a dangerous blood thickening agent) it is converted into methionine. High levels of homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (Reference 4).

Konig’s Super Choline synergistically associates methionine, choline and natural vitamin B-12 (methylcobalamin). In addition the 300 mg of Choline in each capsule are derived both from choline bitartrate and of phosphatidylcholine.
